Abstract

Learning a new language is considered as difficult task because it needs more exercises in various skills. Media plays the important role in increasing the learners’ desire to learn by creating the atmosphere of fun. In this digital era, learning models utilize technology as leaning media to provide wider access and opportunities for students in building their own knowledge. The availability of technology in education enables educators to plan and implement innovative and interactive learning model.  The main goal of this paper is to suggest the current media for teaching and learning language in digital era.

Abstract

Interference is one of the factors that can undermine a language system. Generally, interference often occurs in the language learning process. The interference is caused by a tendency to accustom the pronunciation of one language to another. Its scope includes changes in sound form, grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary. Nurul Jadid Islamic boarding school is one of the boarding schools that develops foreign language skills as an attempt to prepare young people to be able to compete in the global world. In fact, the language learners (santri) still often mix the structure of their first language into foreign languages to communicate. Therefore, this study aims to identify the grammatical interference in the foreign language communication of Nurul Jadid students, and what factors behind them. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The results show that the form of interference in Nurul Jadid students’ communication is in the form of morphological and syntactical structures. Besides, these interferences are caused by several factors; they are learners’ bilingualism, language loyalty, synonymy necessity, and the learner’s habit in using their first language. This research is expected to provide information to language teachers so that they can find learning innovations that can improve the quality of foreign language skills of Nurul Jadid's students.

Abstract

William Shakespeare’s Othello is a drama that tells about the woman’s femininity power in her role. Here, Desdemona as the central female character becomes the main focus in this research. This study aims to reveal woman’s roles depicted by Shakespeare in Othello and describe the factors affecting them. This study used the literary criticism with the theory of cultural feminism. This research is a type of descriptive qualitative research. From this research, two findings can be stated as the answer of the problems of the study. The first is, the roles of woman in Shakespeare’s play Othello are woman as a wife, woman as caretaker, and woman as peacemaker. From those roles, the researcher finds that the factors that affect woman’s roles in the drama are relationship and personal factors.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the Islamic students’ perception of writing essay challenges. The sample of this research is 47 students majoring in English Education in one of the Pesantren-s in East Java. The research method used is descriptive quantitative with survey techniques. In this study, a questionnaire was used to determine the frequency of answers and the percentage. The data is calculated with Microsoft Excel. The main findings of this study are: there are 4 types of problems that students face in their essay writing course. They are confused in developing topics, grammatical errors, word choice problems, and poor organization. The overall mean of students' writing problems in the fourth semester is 3.35 and is categorized as "high". Specifically, students' problems in developing topics are 3.46, grammatical errors (3.20), word choice problems (3.51), and poor organization (3.21). Furthermore, from the interpretation of the mean score, most of the students agreed that they had dominant problems in vocabulary and topic development.

Abstract

Al-Mashduqiah Plus Junior High School is one of the boarding school that develops foreign language skills as an attempt to prepare young people to be able to compete in the global world. In fact, the language learners (students) still often mix the structure of their first language into English to write. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the language interference in the students’ English writing assignment, and what factors behind them. The research used descriptive qualitative. The results showed that the form of interference in Al- Mashduqiah Plus Junior High School is morphological and syntactical structure. Besides, these interferences are caused by several factors; they are structural and non-structural factors. The structural factors include the difference of linguistics systems in native language and the targeted language. The non-structural factors include the learners’ bilingualism, language loyalty, the inadequate vocabulary of learners’ language, and the habits of using mother tongue language. This research is expected to provide information to students, teachers, and researchers so that they can find learning innovations that can improve the quality of foreign language skills.
